We had driven by Tesnatee River Winery and Meadery but had not stopped in yet as we believed we did not care for mead. We do not care for sweet liquors or wines, and so far, all we had ever tasted was sweet mead, like at the Renaissance Festivals.

WOW! Were we delighted when the bartender informed us that none of their meads were too sweet! Tesnatee is a no frills charming space, and there were many families there whose kids were enjoying the outside space while Mom and Dad enjoyed their mead. We opted to sit inside for a tasting and met a charming bartender who was very informed and knowledgeable about their selection, and was very well prepared to answer all our questions. For this review, I am going to list what we drank, with our impressions:

Appalachian Blue – Very nice, tasted a lot of blueberry!

The Noble – Very respectable dry red, would be great with steak or even barbeque.

Hard Apple Cider – If you like ciders, this was very good. We generally do not have a taste for cider, but it was nice.

Tesnatee River Dry Rose – Dry and crisp!

The Sunbelt – We ordered the Dry version and it is quite flavorful, and skewed more semi-sweet than Dry in our opinion.

Blackberry Delight – Very nice, had never tasted blackberry like this.

The white wines did skew a little on the sweet side. So if you prefer sweet wines, order a white. All the red wines were dry and crisp and nice, and are the styles we prefer.

We were offered at the end of this journey a taste of an off-shelf Peach Wine – It was delightful, had some bite and did taste like peach, but not thick like peach syrup. We liked it!

For an alternative to the area’s wineries, stop by Tesnatee River Winery and Meadery for a rare experience and rare chance in the area to enjoy mead, cider, and a wine selection that will please a wide variety of tastes and preferences. Be sure to tip 15-20% on your tab or at least $1 per wine or drink as tradition here in America.
